Artist Statement

If you are My witnesses then I am the One.  And if you are not My witnesses, I am not, as it were, the Holy One.  (Pesikta d’Rav Kahane)

These photographs were taken at the festive “Power Toward a Just Future” parade on August 2, 2018, in Centre City Philadelphia, a parade to raise awareness of the nexus between climate disruption and racial injustice. The parade inspired a community of witnesses— individuals from many cultural backgrounds who were captivated by the parade and, as reflected in the photographs, who stopped to observe and to capture the event with their smartphones. The witnesses, in their witnessing, elevated the parade to a moment of transcendence, of making visible our interconnection with one another.  Viewing these photographs, each of us becomes a witness as well.
